The RIBpower system is a lithium-ion powered propulsion solution for dinghies.  It was developed with the goal of providing boaters with a cost effective and safe alternative to using gasoline or lead acid batteries as a source of energy.  The system is ideal for boaters who use a RIB to travel to and from their moored vessel. The RIBpower pack not only powers the motor but can also be used to power navigation lights.  The entire system is plug and play! The power pack weighs just 17.5 lbs (~8 kgs)--it is so light that it actually floats. The equivalent pack with a lead-acid battery would weigh approximately 50 lbs (~23 kgs) !

Optional Navigation Lighting System

International and US law requires that all vessels under power have navigation lighting during nighttime operation.  This is necessary for safety. The RIBpower system offers an optional LED light kit that plugs into the pack. You no longer have to deal with maintaining a separate navigation lighting system with unreliable “flashlight style” lights with separate batteries. Simply plug the permanently (3M VHB tape) or velcro mounted navigation lights into the power pack when lighting is needed. The waterproof connector plugs into a protective receptacle below the stern light when not in use.

Installation takes just a couple of minutes!

Did you know there are a number of different battery chemistries that make up the “Lithium Ion” category – each with its own chemical composition and properties:

  • LCO – Lithium Cobalt Oxide

  • NMC – Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide

  • LMO – Lithium Manganese Oxide

  • NCA – Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide

  • LFP – Lithium Iron Phosphate

When it comes to safety, Lithium Iron Phosphate (a.k.a. LiFePO4) technology is by far the safest chemistry available.

The LiFePO4 technology that is built into every RELiON battery possesses superior chemical and thermal stability over other lithium chemistries, which means better battery safety.   LiFePO4 is an intrinsically safer cathode material than cobalt oxide or manganese oxide cathode. the phosphate based cathode material will not burn and is not prone to thermal runaway. Lithium phosphate cells are incombustible in the event of mishandling during charge or discharge, they are more stable under overcharge or short circuit conditions and they can withstand high temperatures without decomposing. From the viewpoint of safety performance, a LiFePO4 battery is similar to a lead-acid battery.
