Holding RIBpower with logos.jpg

The RIBpower system is a lithium-ion powered propulsion solution for dinghies.  It was developed with the goal of providing boaters with a cost effective and safe alternative to using gasoline or lead acid batteries as a source of energy.  The system is ideal for boaters who use a RIB to travel to and from their moored vessel. The RIBpower pack not only powers the motor but can also be used to power navigation lights.  The entire system is plug and play! The power pack weighs just 17.5 lbs (~8 kgs)--it is so light that it actually floats. The equivalent pack with a lead-acid battery would weigh approximately 50 lbs (~23 kgs) !

Also available as in a kayak specific version.

The system includes:

  • 55-lb Thrust Saltwater Rated Motor

    • Waterproof quick connector

  • RIBpower Pack

    • RELiON Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries (LiFePO4)

      • 640 watt-hour  (Total Energy Capacity)

    • Charging & navigation lights connector port (10-amp breaker)

    • Motor quick connector port (60-amp breaker)

    • Water resistant housing

  • Charger

    • Waterproof quick connector

    • CTEK 4.3 amp 8-stage charger specific for LiFePO4 batteries

Optional Navigation Lighting System

International and US law requires that all vessels under power have navigation lighting during nighttime operation.  This is necessary for safety. The RIBpower system offers an optional LED light kit that plugs into the pack. You no longer have to deal with maintaining a separate navigation lighting system with unreliable “flashlight style” lights with separate batteries. Simply plug the permanently (3M VHB tape) or velcro mounted navigation lights into the power pack when lighting is needed. The waterproof connector plugs into a protective receptacle below the stern light when not in use.

Installation takes just a couple of minutes!

What sets this system apart from motors with integrated lithium ion batteries?

  • Price

    • TWICE the battery capacity compared to the leading competitor for the same price (640 vs. 320 watt-hours)

  • Safety

    • RIBpower is the only portable propulsion system on the market to use LiFePo4 batteries-- the safest lithium chemistry (see safety section)

  • Total Cost of Ownership / Repair Costs

    • By utilizing the extremely popular and highly rated Newport Vessels motor, motor repair costs are significantly less than competitors with integrated lithium batteries.

      • Example: Propeller replacement - $39.90 vs $99.99 USD

    • LiFePO4 batteries have a ~3x longer lifespan than Lithium-Manganese

  • Optional integrated navigation lighting kit

Advantages over Gasoline engines

  • Safety - No more hazardous flammable fumes

  • Convenience - No more trips to the gas station.  The RIBpower pack can be recharged onboard the large boat or at home with a 110VAC receptacle

  • Low Maintenance - Almost everyone who has owned a small gasoline engine knows about the headaches associated with them. No more clogged carburetors or fouled spark plugs.

  • No more inhaling smoke!

  • Noise - Compared to gasoline engines, electric motors are virtually silent.  This can be a huge advantage on those early weekend mornings!

Safety

Did you know there are a number of different battery chemistries that make up the “Lithium Ion” category – each with its own chemical composition and properties:

  • LCO – Lithium Cobalt Oxide

  • NMC – Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide

  • LMO – Lithium Manganese Oxide

  • NCA – Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide

  • LFP – Lithium Iron Phosphate

When it comes to safety, Lithium Iron Phosphate (a.k.a. LiFePO4) technology is by far the safest chemistry available.

The LiFePO4 technology that is built into every RELiON battery possesses superior chemical and thermal stability over other lithium chemistries, which means better battery safety.   LiFePO4 is an intrinsically safer cathode material than cobalt oxide or manganese oxide cathode. the phosphate based cathode material will not burn and is not prone to thermal runaway. Lithium phosphate cells are incombustible in the event of mishandling during charge or discharge, they are more stable under overcharge or short circuit conditions and they can withstand high temperatures without decomposing. From the viewpoint of safety performance, a LiFePO4 battery is similar to a lead-acid battery.

Seaworthy Innovations is committed to user safety above all else.  This is why we have chosen LiFePO4 over the other lithium based chemistries that are used by our competitors.

Specifications:

Power Pack Weight: 17.5 lbs (~8kgs)

Motor Weight: 23 lbs (~10kgs)

Thrust: 55lbs

Voltage: 12.8

Amp-hours: 50

Watt-hours: 640

The watt-hour figure represents the total energy capacity of the battery. This number is useful when comparing systems.

(Voltage x Amp-hours = Watt-hours)

Battery Chemistry: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4)
